Rhosneigr Circular Walk

If you’re looking for a short, easy walk that combines lakeside wildlife with golden sandy beaches, the Rhosneigr Circular Walk was made for you!

This 3.6 km route takes you around the shores of Llyn Maelog, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, before looping along the wide sands of Traeth Llydan.

It’s a gentle stroll with plenty of variety – reedbeds alive with birdsong, wildflower-fringed paths, and sweeping coastal views – making it a fantastic family-friendly option and one of our favourite toddler walks in Anglesey!

  • Start/Finish: Small car park near the A4080 bridge outside Rhosneigr

  • Distance: 3.6 km

  • Ascent: Minimal (flat walk)

  • Time: 1 - 1.5 hours (depending on pace – use The Hiking Time Calculator as a guide)

This is an easy, flat walk that anyone can enjoy. Along the way, you’ll pass wetlands full of birdlife, rocky outcrops and gorse, and finish with a stroll along one of Anglesey’s most popular beaches.

Binoculars are a great idea for this route, as both the lake and the dunes are teeming with wildlife throughout the year.

Here’s a step-by-step outline of the Rhosneigr Circular Walk:

  1. Start at the small car park next to the road bridge on the A4080. Cross carefully and follow the boardwalk into the lake area.

  2. Continue past reedbeds and along the lakeside path, climbing gently through bracken and outcrops before looping towards Ty Hen Holiday Park.

  3. Follow the yellow markers along the edge of Llyn Maelog, weaving between rocky ground, gorse and grassland until you reach the farthest footbridge at the lake’s end.

  4. Cross the bridge and continue through kissing gates, hawthorn trees, and grassy clearings before reaching the lane back to the main road.

  5. Turn right at the main road, over the bridge. Cross the road to the post box and follow the lane past Pensieri Caravan Park.

  6. Pick up the Anglesey Coast Path through the dunes, or head directly onto Traeth Llydan beach.

  7. Walk along the wide, sandy bay before crossing the stream from Llyn Maelog via a footbridge. Follow the path back past houses to return to your starting point.


Parking Options

There’s a small off-road parking area for around 6–7 cars next to the A4080 bridge, just outside Rhosneigr. Additional parking can be found in the village if needed.

Refreshments

Rhosneigr village has several cafés, pubs, and shops. The Oystercatcher near the dunes is a large, popular restaurant and bar – perfect for a post-walk meal.

Public Transport

Train: Rhosneigr rail station is located near the northern end of Llyn Maelog and connects easily to the walk.

Bus: Services 25 (Holyhead–Aberffraw) and 45 (Llangefni–Rhosneigr) both stop in the village (Monday–Saturday).
