If you’re heading to Llanddwyn Island for a whimsical walk, then you’re in for a treat.

Newborough Beach and Newborough Forest are found right next to Llanddwyn Island and are well worth an explore!

Llanddwyn Island

Picture this: rolling sand dunes, dramatic coastlines, and a fairytale-like island beckoning you from afar. Welcome to Llanddwyn Island!

Feel like you're in a fantasy novel as you explore the ruins of a medieval church and catch a glimpse of fairies fluttering by. Llanddwyn Island is your passport to a whimsical adventure you'll never forget!

Nestled on the southwestern corner of Anglesey, this enchanting destination boasts a rich history and breathtaking natural beauty that will leave you spellbound.

Newborough Beach

With its stunning sandy shores, crystal-clear waters, and enchanting woodland nearby, Newborough Beach is a dream location.

Whether you're into paddleboarding, beach volleyball, or just lounging with a good book, Newborough has got you covered.

It’s also a great location for the paw-fect dog walk!

Stroll along the golden sands, with sounds of crashing waves and views of glistening mountains.

Feel the warm sand between your toes and breathe in the invigorating sea breeze. It's nature's way of saying, "Welcome to paradise!"

Newborough Forest

Nestled in the heart of nature, this enchanting woodland is a haven for adventure-seeking souls like me and you.

With towering trees and winding trails, it's the perfect escape from the daily grind.

Amble through the winding paths and keep an eye out for the elusive red squirrels darting among the branches.

The forest's tranquility is the perfect backdrop for a peaceful picnic or a moment of quiet reflection.


Where is Llanddwyn Island?

Now that we've whetted our appetite for adventure, let's find out where Llanddwyn Island is hiding.

Located off the western coast of Anglesey, North Wales, this picturesque island lies within the Newborough Warren National Nature Reserve.

You'll find it just a stone's throw away from the mainland, but trust me, it's a world apart.


How to Get to Llanddwyn Island

To reach Llanddwyn Island, you'll need to start at the village of Newborough, Anglesey.

From there, follow the clearly marked path that winds its way through Newborough Forest and leads you straight to the island's magical shores.

Remember, it's not the destination, but the journey that counts! (But in this case, the destination is pretty epic!)

Finally, the main event! Here are three of my favourite, tried and tested, Llanddwyn Island Walks…

Lovers' Leap Loop - Llanddwyn Island Circular Walk

5.6km | 2 hours

Route details: Ynys Llanddwyn Circular Path

Legend has it that Llanddwyn Island was once home to the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Saint Dwynwen. The Lovers' Leap Loop will take you on a mystical journey through ancient ruins, breathtaking cliffs, and romantic settings.

The walk starts from the main beach car park. Begin by following the picturesque forestry track for 1km before turning left onto the beach. From here you’ll walk onto Ynys Llanddwyn and follow the 1km loop around the island, before returning to the main car park.

As you wander through this enchanted trail, imagine the stories of love and heartache that have unfolded in this very place. It's a perfect spot to bring your significant other and create your own love story amidst the ethereal beauty of Llanddwyn Island.

The Best of Both - Newborough Forest and Llanddwyn Island Circular Walk

18km | 4-5 hours

Route details: Newborough and Ynys Llanddwyn Circular

If you’re looking for a bigger adventure, this Llanddwyn Island walk is for you. Take in the very best of Newborough Forest and Ynys Llanddwyn on this 15km hike.

Starting from the main car park, the trail starts by heading along the beach to Ynys Llanddwyn. As you step foot onto Llanddwyn Island, prepare to be mesmerized. Explore the two lighthouses and ruins of St Dwynwen’s Church before continuing along the coastline and into Newborough Forest.

Newborough Forest is the largest forest on Anglesey - an enchanting woodlands, popular amongst locals and tourists alike. Keep your eyes peeled for Red Squirrels!

Don't forget your camera because you'll encounter picture-perfect spots that will make your Instagram followers green with envy!

Princes and Pines Heritage Trail - Newborough Forest Walk

4km | 2 hours

Route details: Princes and Pines Heritage Trail

If you're seeking a moment of tranquillity amidst nature's embrace, the Princes and Pines Heritage Trail is just what you need.

Starting from Cwmhingar Car Park, this peaceful trail winds through the forest towards the outskirts of Newborough and then back into the enchanting woods. Take a deep breath, listen to the birdsong, and let the calming vibes of Llanddwyn Island and Newborough Forest work their magic on your soul.


Llanddwyn Island Parking

Llanddwyn Island has designated parking areas to ensure a smooth start to your adventure.

Upon arrival, follow the signs to the main car park, where you can safely leave your car while you immerse yourself in the island's natural wonders.

The main car park for the beach is at the end of a narrow lane (Church Street) that leads from the cross-roads in the centre of the village Newborough.

Postcode: LL61 6SG

There is a cost to park here (£2 for the first two hours, then 40p for every extra 20 minutes).

Remember to pack your essentials, like sunscreen, water, and snacks, for a comfortable and enjoyable walk.


Llanddwyn Island Tide Times

One important thing to keep in mind when planning your Llanddwyn Island walk is the tide times.

The island is accessible by a narrow causeway that is submerged during high tide, so timing is crucial.

Be sure to check the tide times in advance and plan your visit accordingly.
