Free Nature Scavenger Hunt for Kids

There’s something magical about watching your child discover the outdoors – whether it’s spotting a squirrel in the trees or finding the perfect pinecone to pop in their pocket. My toddler loves going on a nature walk scavenger hunt, and it’s become one of our favourite go-to activities when we need some fresh air and a bit of screen-free fun.

So today, I’m sharing a free nature scavenger hunt printable that you can take on your next walk – perfect for parks, woodlands, or even your own back garden. It’s a fun way to keep little ones engaged and encourage them to explore the natural world around them.

What is a Nature Scavenger Hunt?

A nature scavenger hunt is a simple and fun outdoor activity for kids, where they tick off things they find in the wild – like leaves, birds, bugs, and even interesting sounds. It adds a bit of purpose to your walk and helps children slow down and notice the little things. Plus, it’s a great way to build their observation skills and boost their vocabulary too.

Whether you're heading out on a family hike or just popping out for a stroll near home, a nature walk scavenger hunt is a brilliant way to make it more exciting (especially if your toddler needs a bit of encouragement to get their wellies on!).

Print it at home, pop it on a clipboard or in a plastic wallet, and you’re ready to go! We usually take a crayon or washable marker out with us so my toddler can tick things off as we go.

Ideas for Using Your Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

Here are a few of our favourite ways to use the printable:

  • On your local walk: Whether it’s a country trail, nature reserve or a walk through the woods, there’s always something new to find.

  • In the garden: If you're short on time (or energy!), a garden scavenger hunt is just as fun – especially after rain when everything feels extra wild.

  • On holiday: We’ve taken ours on trips to the Lake District and North Wales – it’s great for keeping little legs moving!

  • At a playdate or birthday party: Print a few copies and turn it into a group activity with prizes.

Why Kids Love Nature Scavenger Hunts (and So Do We!)

We all know the benefits of getting outside – fresh air, movement, and a break from screens. But a nature scavenger hunt for kids turns a regular walk into a mini adventure. It gives toddlers and preschoolers something to focus on and keeps their curiosity going the whole way round.

And for us parents? It buys us a bit of peace, a few moments to sip that lukewarm coffee in our flask, and the joy of seeing our little ones truly connect with nature.

Pin or Save It for Later

If you're anything like me and love a good printable for your activity stash, feel free to save this one for a rainy day (or a sunny one – both work!).

📌 Pin it or share with a friend who needs a new outdoor idea for the kids.
